Sammy Raisman

I’ve been teaching Sammy’s sister, and that’s how I met Sammy! He came to her first recital, and after the show, he approached me and said, “I want to play the piano! When can I start?” Every week, he was determined to learn as much as he could, eager to play everything perfectly to “pass” a song and move on. He learned the notes and where they were located on the keyboard in just one week—talk about impressive! As with all students, there will be weeks when you shine brighter than others. It’s all about how you handle those moments and how you practice. There’s a saying that 80% of your progress comes from practicing the hardest 20% of the music. Sammy is doing wonderfully and progressing so quickly, and I’m excited about our musical journey together.

During one lesson, we were learning how to read the staff notes names. He said, “Miss Deb, that’s not part of learning the piano, let’s get to the keys.” (I might have misquoted him, and Sammy will correct me—lol!)

During lessons, he keeps me on my toes because he loves to play one particular iPad game. If he makes a mistake, he starts the game over and over…after that lesson, my brain was exhausted! I really enjoy how he challenges me, and since my stroke, he’s been helping me regain knowledge that I’ve lost. So, thank you, Sammy, for helping me. I truly enjoy hearing about all your hobbies, schools, and everything you talk about, and I truly appreciate you as a young musician.

About the Student of the Month:

Sammy began playing piano in January 2025 after attending Miss Deb’s piano recital and watching his sister perform. Sammy also plays the saxophone and takes karate classes. He enjoys reading, especially books about Greek Mythology, seeing Broadway musicals, and traveling.

What does it mean to be student of the month to me?

Becoming student of the month would mean so much to me. It would be a motivation to work hard so that I can get it every month. It will also show how hard work pays off. And finally, it will make me proud of myself.

Thanks for making piano fun!
